Walkerburn Community Allotments

Welcome to Walkerburn Allotments.

Situated along the River Tweed between Innerleithen and Elibank, Walkerburn has just recently been awarded funds to allow development of allotments on the east end of the village.

South facing Walkerburn ensures all day sunshine, during the two weeks of summer that is, which should hopefully encourage vegetables, fruits and flowers to flourish.

We aim to keep you updated with the development of the allotments as well as additional tips and news to help you with your own gardening or allotment venture.

The First Walkerburn Community Allotment Monthly Get Together

The First Walkerburn Community Allotment Monthly Get TogetherWell the first Walkerburn Community Allotment Monthly get together was blessed with a lovely sunny day, even though some rain would be handy as the ground really is crying out for it. A good turnout from all insured a great deal of the back log was taken care of.

Walkerburn Community Allotment Monthly Get TogetherObviously it wasn’t long before we stopped for tea and biscuits, strawberries, scones, etc. We did manage to talk about our plans for the allotment between mouthfuls so you could call it a working lunch – then again.

All in all a good days work was carried out with the rest of the potatoes, onions, some more strawberries and even some asparagus making their way into the soil. The new community shed also saw some work as well as the building of a cold store, it shouldn’t be long before we see some broad beans, beetroot, peas and radish making an appearance under here.

Walkerburn Community Allotment Monthly Get Together Finishing Up

Here’s looking forward to next month’s get together with hopefully another good turnout.

Walkerburn Community Allotment shed makes an appearance

community shed walkerburn allotmentsWell things are looking up with the new Walkerburn community allotment shed. It’s all been happening this week with our new shed and the installation of a stand-pipe – although strangely enough we don’t have any funding to actually connect it up to the mains! Thanks to the unseasonal sunny weather there’s not a drop of water to be seen in the water butts either, I’m sure it won’t be long before we’re back to our usual wet and windy Spring. here’s hoping for a large turn out on Sunday.

Walkerburn Allotments potato planting starts

planting potatoes walkerburn allotmentThis week saw the first two rows of potatoes planted. The rows were planted around seven days apart to try and extend the yield through the summer – a third and final row will go in next week with a crop of onions planted at around the same time.

Hopefully there should be some serious action this Sunday 17-04-11 when the Community Allotment volunteers have their first on site con-flab. See you there for drinks and nibbles!

Walkerburn Community Allotment work starts at last

Well today saw work start on clearing the stones and generally cleaning up the allotment.  About half of the allotment plot was cleared before the Scottish weather made an untimely appearance.  As you can see we’ve lots of material left over for anyone interested in starting a rockery, free to take away just bring a truck.stones from the allotment

Some strawberries were planted this morning as well – thanks go to Ian McVean for supplying and planting.

Thanks should also go to Helen and Mani Maniam for donating lots of vegetable seeds, so far our window sill is graced with broad beans and peas – give it a few weeks and we’ll see these make an appearance on the allotment.

Hopefully this week should see the Community Allotment shed erected along with some potatoes and onions planted – once I get a hold of Beth Tocher that is.

Tune in next week for an another exciting episode of Walkerburn Allotments!
